We are pleased to solicit submissions for the Math + Fashion Show at Bridges Halifax. We look forward to exhibiting a variety of fashionable math-forward looks.
As this fashion show is part of a professional conference, we will only accept works with substantive mathematical content that are appropriate for a family audience. We encourage designers to submit fashions for a variety of genders and body types as we hope to have an inclusive runway presentation.
Submissions primarily consist of the following for each look.
- The name(s) of the item(s) in each look.
- A description of at most 250 words for the judging committee. Your description should include the techniques and materials used, and should clearly convey the mathematical ideas behind the look.
- One or more photographs of the item(s) in the look for the judging committee and the printed lookbook. At least one photograph must show a person wearing the look.
- The designated person in charge of the submission(s), who may be the submitter and must be attending Bridges Halifax. We do not have funds or infrastructure to bring items to and from the conference, so artists are responsible for bringing the items themselves or designating a surrogate.
Works included in the fashion show will appear in the printed Math + Fashion Lookbook. Once decisions are made, we will invite accepted designers to submit supplementary materials such as process shots or design sketches for possible inclusion in the lookbook.
The fashion will be judged on the following six criteria, and curated to produce a balanced short program featuring a diversity of designs and models.
- Mathematical content.
- Expository text.
- Aesthetic appeal.
- Craftsmanship.
- Innovative design.
- Runway impact.
The submission period is 15 March to 15 April, and decisions will be released by May 1.
